PTFE Lined-Metal Expansion Joints

We use pipe or duct Expansion joints for taking up expansion in tube or ducts due to temperature. Any line, be it SS, CS Copper, Plastic, will expand based on its thermal coefficient.

The piping engineer designs the pipe length and introduce loops or bends to take up the expansion naturally by allowing it to expand with the pipe’s natural flexibility—typically half a degree as a rule of thumb in the perpendicular direction.

We can absorb pipe expansion either; axially, laterally or in the angular direction. Depending on the layout of the pipe, we employ the most optimum types for the application.

Other factors are considered, such as anchors, guides, and site conditions for selecting the expansion joints for a given application. 

The best way to select the type is the overall system cost.
 

The design factors to consider are thrust forces created due to expansion joints, guides enabling the pipe to expand linearly, vibration, ease of maintenance, periodic inspections, access and many others.

The element of an expansion joint has five design variables: the height of the convolution, pitch of the convolution, thickness of element, number of layers of convolutions, and convolution numbers.

By varying these design variables, we can achieve the right element design for the given application.

We distinguish Expansion Joint type as either a restrained or unrestrained type of Expansion joints.

Unrestrained type of expansion joints does not absorb pressure thrust forces. Pressure thrust force is the force that is the product of the mean area of expansion joint times the internal pressure. This force is higher than the hydraulic force of a pipe due to the increased area of the expansion joint. This type of joint is used to absorb movement small and large axial movement in a pipeline.

 It absorbs pressure thrust forces with the hardware used to restrain it in a restrained type of expansion joints. This type of joints is used primarily to absorb lateral or angular movements in a pipeline.

With a combination of unrestrained and restrained joint, metal expansion joints can solve most piping thermal expansion challenges. There is no restriction to pressure or temperature using metal expansion joints.
